| The Jal Mahal, also known as
the Water Palace, is midway on the road from Jaipur
to Amber Fort in Rajasthan, and seen when the lake is
full, is one of Jaipur's more serene looking palaces.
The building is quite run down, and when we visited
in 1996, access via the pontoon bridge was barred to
the public, although on an earlier visit it was possible
to walk across the dry lake bed and enter the building.
The roof terrace still has an air of its former magnificence,
with the remains of fountains, and a withered tree in
a large flower pot in the centre.
Rajasthan, the "Land of Princes", and home
of the Rajputs, is probably India's main tourist destination.
It is a state rich in history, filled with forts, monuments
and the palaces of former Maharajas. Jaipur, also known
as the "pink city", boasts an incredible number
of historic buildings, and the Water Palace is one of
the major stops on the city sightseeing trips popular
with backpackers and holiday makers, often on a tour
of the famous "golden triangle" of Delhi -
Agra - Jaipur. Jaipur, Rajasthan
