Photo gallery and slide show: Situated about 250 km north
of Delhi, Chandigarh has the odd function of serving as state capital of both
Haryana and the Punjab and simultaneously being a Union Territory administered
from Delhi. Built in 1953, Chandigarh is a planned city, its Swiss born main
architect Le Corbusier responsible for its spacious layout, grid pattern of
wide roads and the town's division into 57 sectors. Chandigarh's residents are
intensely proud of their city, which has an India wide reputation for being
modern and clean, although the central sectors suffer from a lack of maintainance,
the many broken paving stones and scattered rubbish give the place a rather
worn look. Due to the spread out sectors and rather uniform Soviet 'miracle
in concrete' style commercial blocks, Chandigarh lacks the variety, intensity
and atmosphere of a normal bustling Indian market town that usually stems from
more 'organic' urban growth. Its major sight is the outstanding and award winning
Rock Garden, initiated by Nek Chand. It is also well off for green open spaces,
with its Rose Garden the largest in Asia.
