Photo gallery and slide show: The photos in this gallery mainly
depict children from the villages in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu
Valley region, who in general have a better quality of life than
those in poorer parts of India. Although they have to do household
chores and work in the family fields like all Indian kids, most
go to school (HP has one of the highest literacy rates) and have
plenty of opportunity for playing outdoors with their friends
in and around their village, usually easily satisfied with improvised
toys and games such as cricket with a home made bat, or an old
bicycle tyre rolled down a hill. Children in India are almost
a national obsession and are usually showered with love and affection,
but while western parents are often overly protective and restrictive
of their childrens activities, Indian parents place more trust
in their society and their kids ability to use common sense and
to learn by experience. The lot of a child in India is extremely variable, with children of the urban
poor especially vulnerable to exploitation, and much work is done by NGOs
such as lifebuilder
and Voice of children
to improve the life and prospects of India's less fortunate
children.
