| Photo gallery and slide show. The Spiti Valley
is a remote mountain desert region in the Himalaya, lying in the North
East of the Indian hill state of Himachal Pradesh, and forming part
of the Lahaul and Spiti district. Thick ice and heavy snow fall on
Rohtang La and Kunzum La Passes render the Spiti Valley inaccessible
by the northern route via Manali or Keylong for seven to eight months
of the year. Access is still possible during winter by the southern
route, via Shimla and the Sutlej Valley in Kinnaur district. Spiti
has a distinctive Buddhist culture similar to that found in Tibet
and the Ladakh region of India. |
