naggar - recommended places in himachal pradeshNaggar is a peaceful village situated along the hills on the east bank (known locally as the Left Bank) of the Beas river. The beautiful Naggar castle (now a Himachal Tourism hotel and restaurant) is the legacy of its status as the old capital of the former Kullu Kingdom about 500 years ago. The castle commands an incredible view of the river far below and the villages that litter the opposite bank, with the distant snow peaks beyond the Rohtang La Pass visible on a clear day. In the Deodar forest on top of a hill above Naggar village is the old wood and stone Krishna Mandir (temple); foreigners are not allowed inside the sanctuary but are welcome to wander around the courtyard. At the edge of the village lies the Roerich gallery displaying oil paintings and the 1930's Dodge car of the famous Russian artist Gurudev Nikolai Roerich who lived in Naggar for many years. In the trekking season, Naggar serves as a starting point for the trek to the village of Malana via the Chandrakhani Pass.

 guest house
/ hotel:

Sheetal guesthouse has nice rooms with plenty of wood panelling, with room prices ranging from 150 - 500 Rs, and a terrace restaurant with a great view of the village. We always fancied staying in Naggar Castle (run as a hotel by HP tourism)- but never did; there are quite a few other guesthouses around

 restaurant
/ dhaba:

The Naggar Castle HP Tourism dept restaurant serves good Indian food, otherwise most of the guesthouses have attached restaurants (most of the time fairly empty); Alliance Guesthouse offers yummy (but expensive) waffles. Restorante Italiano La Purezza close to Naggar's pagoda style Tripura Sundri temple serves surprisingly good and reasonably priced Italian food.

local interest:

Krishna Mandir, Roehrich Gallery, old castle, old village temples, starting point for trek, day hikes

season:

April to June is best, but also okay during the monsoon July to August; September / October, after which its a bit cold.

transport:

by bus from Manali (20 km, appr. 1 hour), bus from Kullu (20 km, appr. 1 hour). If you dislike crowded buses, take a bus from Manali to Patlikuhl, after which its a 40 Rs rickshaw to Naggar bus stand, or 60 to the castle.
