 Ankola
recommended recommended graphic
state: Karnataka location: between Karwar & Gokarn, off NH17
info date: Feb 2002 size: small town
season: Oct - Mar transport: bus, possibly train, best your own
hotels: a few good for: motor bike tours best

drying fish along the coast near ankola - recommended places in karnatakaAnkola is a typical small town near the coast and makes a good overnight stop and a good base to explore the coastline, if you have your own transport. Just a few kilometres away from the town through the village of Bhelakeri is a huge flat cliff top overlooking miles of deserted sandy beaches - probably not suitable for sunbathing. The cliff top is used as a giant fish drying area; fascinating to see fish and workers but, less fascinating to smell. Definitely worth going to.

 guest house
/ hotel:

Varradaraj Hotel on NH17 about 5 km north of Ankola town; there are a couple of guest houses in Ankola town itself as well. We don't know of anywhere to stay along the beach.

 restaurant
/ dhaba:

dhabas in town or the busy roadside restaurant attached to the above mentioned hotel, which did a fairly award winning chicken Biriyani

local interest:

coast line west of Ankola, especially the huge cliff top used for drying fish

transport:

bus from Karwar, possibly by train, but best is your own (to drive through villages to the coast)
