Murdeshwar
is a fishing village that appears to be completely dedicated
to the civil construction moghul RK Shetty; he rebuilt the
Mhatobar Shri Murdeshwar temple about 20 years ago, which
is supposed to be "very old" (the standard 5,000
years or more reasonable 50 years, depending on whom you speak
to); recent years have seen the construction of a giant Shiva
Statue, 164 ft high, on the tiny peninsular overlooking the
beach front, which includes a small church and a mosque. Apart
from the base, the concrete gold painted statue had been finished
by early 2002. A 184 meter narrow 26 storied building is in
progress which will eventually show amongst other things stone
carvings of the story of the temple. A well and truly gobsmacking
place to go to.
