chinese fishing nets at the water front of fort kochi - recommended places in keralaKochi is one of the major tourist destinations in Kerala; it generally is referred to as several islands and the busy noisy city of Ernakulum on the mainland. The beach in front of Fort Kochin (with alternative spellings or names Fort Kochi or Fort Cochin) is dotted with Chinese fishing nets giving postcard views at sunset times. Apart from sight-seeing (old churches, Jewish market and the Mattancherry Palace) it's just nice to stroll through the tranquil streets which are reminiscent of a small Mediterranean town, to take some Ferry rides to the neighbouring Vypin and Willingdon islands or try to spot some dolphins in the sea. Sunsets at the weekend attract crowds of locals to the beach for a stroll and an Ice Cream. Altogether a nice place to stay for a few days.

 guest house
/ hotel:

a lot of them in either Ernakulum or Fort Kochi; the latter being the more expensive and often booked; Elite Hotel is an option if you don't want to park your motorbike along one of those narrow streets (300 Rs for a fairly uninspiring and pokey room with attached bathroom)

 restaurant
/ dhaba:

here it comes: the best ever: the only proper Lebanese restaurant in South India - maybe the best middle eastern food in the whole of India: "Casablanca", run by a very nice woman with Jordanian / Lebanese ancestors. It's located opposite the ship yard gate at the south end of MG Road in Ernakulum; close to the Atlantic bus stop. Best Mezze and main dishes (around 100-130Rs), far less expensive than it looks from outside, the food doesn't cost more than in a good Indian restaurant. Otherwise plenty of restaurants either in Ernakulum or Fort Kochi.

local interest:

chinese fishing nets, old portuguese buildings, spice market, market lanes, ferry rides across the islands

transport:

train or bus to Ernakulum, from there bus or ferry or your own to Fort Kochi
